Just back from Aldi (Linwood Paisley) and they are selling
a 160GB Gigacom(?) Internal Hard Drive for £49.99.
Reduced from £69.99.
Looks a pretty good deal to me, hope it is of use to someone.
They had 3 or 4 when I was in.

Probably Gericom. They're rebadged Samsungs; nice drives, and that's a very fair price.

I wonder if they'll fit in a sky+ box? People are paying £110 round here to get their upgraded to a 160Gb disk.0

They must be daft then. I bought a 160GB Maxtor from Dabs for £58 delivered a few weeks ago and installed it myself. Easy peasy.

Been like that for ages.I thought I was the only one watching that.
When it appears in stock the first few usually get it at that price then it is increased to the correct price0 -
PCW component centre are becoming notorious for advertising out of stock products at prices no-one will ever get >:(.Not a bad price, but when it comes to hard disks i'd go for a brand as they are only a little more expensive and if your disk dies its a real pain.
As I said, these are Samsung drives; they have a good reputation (and a three year guarantee from Aldi as I understand it).
The only hard disk I've ever had go wrong was a Western Digital. At the end of the day, there's no substitute for backups.

Buyers of drives bigger than 137Gb should be advised that some versions of Windows will not see large drives without 48 bit LBA Support
See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303013 for Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305098/EN-US/ for Windows 2000
and for 98 and ME see
http://www.48bitlba.com/win98.htm
This is important since setting up the drive may prove impossible and buyers complaining to Aldi (etc) that the drive is not full size.

is it as easy at that? ie just buy any higher capacity hard drive and stick it into a regular sky+ box? what about compatibility issues?0 -
