I've just received a credit of £1187.40 to my Barclays current account from AMEX.

They should have actually taken this amount out as it was my last month's statement balance.

I guess they have refunded this by mistake.

Can they claim this money back if I go ahead and spend it?

  • Yes, they can (and will) take it back from you one way or another. Best to phone them ASAP and tell them of their mistake.

say nothing just leave it there
if they ask for it its there to give back
even if they do its still earning interest in your account

if they havent taken it then you will be charged interest so I would call them, if they have and its been returned there could be an issue and again you will be charged interest.

only if they have credited your amex card account and credited your bank account could you hold it until they ask for it back.

Barclays current account - so no interest!
  • Are you sure that its not just the direct debit bouncing?
Amex ask for it the bank declines to pay so it appears as a ''credit'' on your bank account.
Result (perhaps) a returned payment fee, a late payment fee????
