What rights do I have regarding competitions?

Its a life lesson you have to learn,i am afraid.!!!! happens.
Unfair,but true.0 -
The problem is just because a company was registered at one point doesnt mean it was necessary running from then.
Likewise its young business of the year not inventor so just because they are using someone elses work doesnt make it wrong
Unless you want to name the competition and finalists its very hard for us to comment but your solicitor and the event seem to think you have no case and one might suggest the amount of time you have spent on this cries of bitterness.0 -

Actually, the lawyer thinks I DO have a case, but that it's just not worth pursuing because there is such minimal direct loss in the case. The thing is that it's not about loss, but about principle. If I were to pursue a case then all that would happen is that the organisers might be forced to rejudge it - and that's hardly likely to result in me getting through after all of this...
Re: your first point. I have definitive proof from all of them that they were trading (i.e. taking money for services/products) at a certain date, regardless of their date of incorporation. For example, client testimonials thanking companies for their work and speed of service.
And re: the second point, it's young entrepreneur, not business, although the award is a little muddled on that point - it does state that anyone actively involved with the business needs to be under 30. You're just going to have to trust me when I say I have the clearest possible proof.
The amount of time spent on this might cry of bitterness, but if so it's the bitterness of the other 15 too who also want to take action on this issue. The truth is that I AM bitter - to have spent significant time and energy on this, like others, only to find the competition rigged and the winners ineligible. The prize would have transformed my life - or the life of whoever won - so it's hardly controversial to ask that it's judged fairly, is it?0 -
it doesn't mean to say that you would have won anyway even if as you claim the competition was "fixed" (though from the sounds of it you think you should have)
If the advice of your lawyer is to let it go then perhaps you should do that and move on instead of spending so much time/effort and I'm assuming your lawyer doesn't work for free so also money on getting revenge0 -

but how can I gain maximum negative press for this company?
Well as long as you keep their name secret they won't gain any negative press.
To be honest though, I doubt you'll be able to do anything to tarnish their reputation. If they even bother to respond to press concerns, they can just say "oh look a bitter loser throwing his dummies out the pram" and it will just be you looking like a pillock.
I'd just rack it up as experience that no competition is what it seems, there are far more losers than winners, and the best entrant doesn't always win.0 -
Focus your energy on growing your own company, rather than seeking to bring a multi-billion £ global company to it's knees over the shame of cocking up a two bit PR exercise.
Not that I mean that in a bad kind of way.........0 -
Thanks for all your replies.
You're right - I shouldn't waste effort on this, but it just makes me so angry. Ah well, never mind...will go and make a cup of tea...
