CD or DVD writer for oldish laptop

I have been given an Acer Travelmate 220 which is about 3 years old and does not have any re-writer. I was looking for an external one, either dvd or cd, that would work well with it. It only has bog standard usb, no firewire. It has an ethernet connection if that is of any use! At the moment it just has a cd drive.
Any suggestions?

Personally I would go for a dvd rewriter as it can burn both dvds and cds, you can connect this via the usb.
Ethernet connection would come in handy if you wanted to connect the laptop to a network. You can't con an honest man!0 -
Would the usb connection be alright? I know it would probably be quite slow, but this is not an issue for me. The usb 2 drives would still work with usb 1 wouldn't they?0

They would work albeit a little slower. You can't con an honest man!0

Some of the latest drives are set up to work with Windows XP and may not operate correctly with older OS like windows 98 for example so before you order a drive check the requirements or it could be an expensive cup holder.0

The laptop does have XP home edition on it. I have had a look on a couple of sites and there is so much information I have not got a clue what to look for! Can anyone recommend a drive?0

I cant personally recommend a drive as I have never used external rewriter, however if you look on ebuyer.com, they have a good range and also customers review the products, for example http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/59128You can't con an honest man!0

You could think about buying a bare drive and transferring the mounting brackets etc. from your CD drive. The basic form-factor of laptop drives has been standard for a while, so it should work...0 -

I did think of this, but as I have no real knowledge of what I am doing I didn't look into it enough. Would any of these types of drives work on the laptop?0 -
