Person offered to clear my CC debt?

A while a go before I even had a credit card some random person overheard us in the pub talking about debt and said that he "works in finance" and for a fee he would clear any outstanding credit card debts or mortgage debts, I asked how this was possibly and all he said was "if I told you, everyone would be doing it".

I think it's a scam, has anyone else ever been offered such a thing?

It is a scam, any company/person claiming to be able to wipe your debt is lying to you and they can not wipe your debt.
The best way forward for you would be to either continue repaying the money that you borrowed from the lender or contact the lender and explain that you are experiencing financial difficulty and wish to reduce your payments to them i.e. an "Arrangement to pay".
