Hard drive replacement advice needed

hmm according to news.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/10381/138750.html it does
I didnt think there was much to compatibility as its the same plug - it may mean that if it was not sata2 compatible, it would just "downgrade" to sata1 and lose that extra speed0 -

How do I check that is is SATA2 compatible?
It is a dell D07916 DIMENSION 9100
DIM 9100 630 (3.0GHZ)
??
Dell website is a good place to start
Unfortuantely the service manual makes no mention of SATA2
http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim9100/en/SM/index.htm
now to check the drive.....0 -
Hi the image on this link...
http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim9100/en/SM/techov.htm#wp1053345
shows 4 sata connectors sata0, sata1, sata2, sata3
so hopefully that will be fine
Thanks again0 -

Thanks againEverybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -
SATA0, SATA1, etc are the port numbers.
But should still be fine, if you do run into trouble read this:

so does that mean it will work?0

read the KB article
1- It 'should' work
2- if not you might have to flick a jumper switch to limit it to SATA 1
3- if that doesn't work WD customer support might have some other answer
4- if that doesn't work RMA it under distance selling regs
option 1 is most likely and I definitely wouldn;t go an buy an old SATA1 only drive as eventually you may upgrade your PC and make use of the faster SATA2 access.0 -
Any SATA drive -2 will work fine, have a look at the prices at www.scan.co.uk
Backup all your data immediately, either to an external drive or to as many CDs/DVDs as it takes.
The drive is dying, and it needs to be replaced. Unless you specifically want this RAID setup, you'd be safer (data wise) having them mirrored (if you want to invest in two new drives), or just buy one new large drive, have it as the main system and data drive, and run backups to the gold old drive (wipe it and reconfigure as a standard drive. I'd suggest Acronis True Image for backups, it's superb.
The Samsung Spinpoint F1 drives are excellent as are many of the WD, plenty of reviews at https://www.pcpro.co.uk0 -
in event viewer (start > run > type eventvwr, press ok and look in the system logs) are there any errors (marked by a red/white cross) saying disk?
it may be worth in the WD software right clicking the failing drive and selecting smart info. if any of the threshold values are anything other than 0 then i'd replace the drive ASAP.
My 500GB WD HDD is on its last legs and i've only had it 6 months.0
