  • Many of the cheaper laptops in Comet, PC World etc have pretty flimsy keyboards/cases and they probably scrimp on internal components as well.

It's always the same in these forums. So called experts slag off the big names largely just because they are big. Sure you can find somebody who has bought a dud from a big name but high volume sales means there are going to be a few problems, it doesn't mean it is endemic in the service from such firms. Without trying too hard on this site you will find recommendations not to buy from Comet, PC World, Currys, Ford, Microsoft, Motorola, The Link etc etc.

When these recommendations are examined they usually have no evidence to back them up and are probably based on somebody's sister's mate who heard down the pub that some bloke was ripped off a couple of years ago....probably!!

To help each other we need to give good quality advice based on consistent experience and not the usual prejudice that comes with the envy of any firm that is moderately successful. That rant aside I enjoy reading most posts on these forums, even if some of them make me cringe.

    And why not?

I wouldn't shop at PC world as my laptop "arced" ie flames jumped from one wire to another., due to a fault. I took the laptop into Bradford as I was told they were very busy, that it would take weeks before they could repair my laptop and they recommended I made my claim via a telephone contact.

I sent my laptop of and it came back unrepaired, they had no idea what the fault was and couldnt see the scorch marks!! The shop did confirm that they had seen the marks. I phoned PC World and they checked the laptop again and found the fault, but my laptop had now been away for over a month so I asked for a new laptop (as per their conditions), but they said that it was not damaged the first time it was returned, when I pointed out that they accepted the damage now, they inferred that the damage had occurred since my first report, when I said does that mean I am a liar they said they took the word of the person who had made the report over mine, so basically yes they think I am a liar and even to the point of damaging the laptop myself!!!

Please remember that I had shown the damage to Bradford PC World and also think about whether this could endanger me or my kids!! COS THEY DIDN'T My experience of PC World is that they are crap!!

Also I was naive when I bought the laptop and accessories and asked for their advise, which I must say was totally WRONG!!!! and purely down to earning commission!!!

My opinion is buy Sony Vaio!!! I have one now and WOW!! My PC World laptop had to be thrown away after 14 months as it was uneconomical to repair!!! My vaio cost the same as my Fuji!!!!

Search the internet and avoid PC World!!!!!!!!

Some of you slag off pc world and stores which sell pc stuff and I dont know why.

If you have problems with your pc/laptop, you can get it dealt with straight away, you should have kept the receipt and even out of date, you are within your consumers rights of getting the equipment repaired free of charge or exchanged like for like if the fault isnt your fault.

You can still do this with online stores but then you would have to send the laptop out and wait for it to be serviced where as in a store, if they dont see to you within say a few hours to a few days, you can always threaten them with legal action or threaten to report their actions to the trading standards.

Its just that with a store, it is quicker to get problems resolved on site rather than having it sent off and so on. You can also get quicker responses as you can speak to the manager or acting manager of the store at that time rather than calling or e-mailing and waiting for replies. At least you can express your dissastisfaction with help or options given first hand and can at least come to some sort of reasoning.

Dont get me wrong, online stores are fantastic too, fantastic range of services and great valued products, but in different peoples eyes, price isnt the sole decision maker. The extra cost from buying at a store retailer can be compensated with a physical after sales supprt and ability to express opinions to a direct source of the company in person.

Up to you I guess, Im a student and definately am a money saver where possible but sometimes, having a service where you contact in person and get problems dealt with quicker makes up for it.

Sorry but they may promise this but my experience was that they dont follow thru!!

    I always try https://www.ebuyer.co.uk

go thru quidco for an extra 1.5%, not much but it may pay for your postage!

I bought a dell dimension PC purely because it worked out at £20, its decent spec (p4 3ghz HT, 512, etc) but its just poor, and not a patch on my shuttle, my amd powered one and my other shuttle. The components are really shoddy, especially the ram/motherboard, multitasking is pretty much impossible (the pc is 1.5 years old).

I would get a pc off scan http://3xs.scan.co.uk/ShowSystem.asp?SystemID=368 or another specialist hardware company as their systems will no doubt be better.

I can add a pointer to this discussion, although it may not help the OP.

I have bought 3 laptops from comets made by Acer. Some will say they are crap brand and filmsy, my opinion is that they are value for money and have been working fine for 9 months. Comet had the cheapest price for the spec beating even dell, I did a lot of price comparision and comet came out the best value.

I used to slate pc world aswell, but less so these days because there are times some of their products are at good prices, although those products tends to have a promotion going.

Remember, always go through quidco. I have saved twice as much when
discovered them last oct (05). R*points are crap value in comparision, although their forums are a positive.

    I agree.

The last two last laptops I bought ended up being from comet. They were the cheapest on the net for the exact same model (Acer and a Sony Vaio).

I have bought from most of the retailers mentioned so far and haven't had a problem with any of them except PCWorld who I would never use again. I have just ordered a laptop online from Comet and picked it purely on value for money and the fact I can take it back to a store if I'm not happy with it. You can also get 4% cashback via Topcashback.
