Not the best place to get a computer from - look at the DELL deals on this site. Look at your local shop (not PC World) and get one made up.0

And why not?0 -
With Comet ,PC world,Dixons and Currys etc you get computers that are usually Expensive and not as upto date as say DELL, MESH or EVESHAM.
I am looking at buying a new computer in the next couple of weeks and it will be either DELL or MESH , DEFINITELY not Comet!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
Well I dont like Dell because their after service has been really bad of late, and lets face it their deals are pretty poor until you slap on the Xtras to make a respectable PC, delivery is eratic at times also.
Now the main thing with PC World is that they are a little pricey, granted, but I do like to talk to a person infront of me and not someone who isnt really interested at the end of some telephone line call centre.0 -
Ignoring the pros and cons of buying from Comet, cashback with Comet is available on cashback sites e.g. Quidco 3.5% and Rpoints 2%painfulcost wrote:planning to buy computer at comet online, does anyone know how to get the price lower ? discount codes or cashback etc?0 -
I've bought from a variety of places over the years, and there's not as much difference between mail order/internet and the 'high street' for your bog-standard stuff these days.
From a personal point of view, I'd rather turn up and have a look (especially monitors) then take it home with me rather than either take a day off or travel to a courier's depot (normally many miles from where I live or work).0 -
painfulcost,
I apologise if I have assumed that you have little experience in this field, but here a some thoughts before you take the plunge. It is up to you what you want to buy and where of course, and I don't know whether or not you have done some research in the product you are buying.
I find when buying a computer you have to consider exactly what your needs are, such as whether you are going to use it for games, internet, use it mainly for office work, whether you want it to store photos/videos - to do digital imaging etc. Taking all into account would determine what specification you need e.g. size of hard drive, processor speed, graphics card, motherboard, dvd recorder etc.
In stores such as comet whether they have standard computers or advanced features you do not have a say/control in the spec. If you go to somewhere such as Dell, or there are other places like savastore and others where you can specify what components you want and the computer is built for your specific needs.
Just a thought.0 -
i have look into pc world, curry's & comet because they are big retailer and i have look at mesh, dell and pcspecialist and a couple of others. pcspecialist is good so far but that i gateway computer spec in comet ( gateway GM5014B) which i think is value for money for what i need if its cheaper by 10%. i am currently trying to get quotes from my local camputer shop to built me one but his TFT monitor quote is bit pricy and his graphic card is the slowest.
so far specs:
CPU pentium D 930, RAM 1024MB, ASUS mother board P5LD2 SE, SATA II 160 GB HD, 16x DVD rw, 512MB Geforce7300GS(256 SMA), 500W dual rail PSU, Microsoft XP pro genuine cd, firewire card, 17" TFT monitor, logitech cordless keyboard and mouse, case, floppy drive with 7:1 card reader,, 1 yr warranty, total £798 at pcspecialist.
maybe my specs too high for just some dvd burning for my camcoder, photoshop and autocad applications. what do you think ?0 -

That's just not true! Comet don;t make their own computers for a start.
I don't often play the "age card" here but I got my first PC in 1984 and have been in the industry ever since. I've recently been buying Acer laptops from Comet because they're good machines and (with Quidco) the Comet online prices are unbeatable.
Previously I was running a laptop repair company. The machines that came in the most were Dells.
I'm beginning to wonder if ill-informed comments on here based solely on rumour or "something I heard from a bloke in the pub" really are useful to the whole community.
By the way, I've just bought a 40" LCD TV from Dixons online and achieved a 30% discount on the shop price. Use the "big name" stores wisely and carefully and you'll find some cracking deals. Can I help?0 -

Why don't you just buy a base station from the local shop and a TFT/ mouse etc from somewhere else? Tesco, Asda, Aldi - everywhere sells this stuff now.
If the local shop is too expensive, try another.0
