Is this possible, or would a dealer insist I have one?

Would it affect it by more than £50?

i would of thought you would get below trade value for the car

if you think it will pass it may well be worth putting it through an MOT

Basically a car with no MOT is an unknown quantity. It may fly straight through or it may need hundreds of pounds worth of work. It will definately reduce the value of the car by over £50.

If its 10 years or older it will be worth virtually nil without an MOT, if it's under that age its probably worth 50% of its true value without one.

Thanks for the advice, we got more than we thought without the MOT, 5yr old basic Skoda and they have offered us £2500.
We only expected about £2000 for it, so not bothering to MOT it, and going with that. :)

Please remember that it's the "cost to change" that matters so £500 here or there isn't important if the for sale price is OTT. Unless they have thoroughly checked your car and know it will need nothing to MOT then they will have undervalued it to compensate for MOT costs. (If you know it needs a lot of work, or its just a scrappage trade-in, fill your boots).

A 5 year old Skoda should have no problem flying through the MOT so long as it was kept serviced.
