I cliam income surport and get what they call a preium for having a sick child. we cliam dla for him and we have had a letter asking to confirm that he is capable of looking after his own dla and if is is going on to further edutication when he is 16 in Feb.
The amswer to both questions are yes, what i need to know as he is stopping on in full time eduction and we will contuine to recive family allowance for him, will they still pay the preineum in our income support or will they expect us to keep him (which we have no reason not too) on the reduce amount of money that we will have comming in.

    Hello Davida41480,

The premiums should remain the same, as whilst in full time education, upto and including NVQ level 3, your son will be a dependant, and whist studying upto this level, Child Benefit can be paid to their 20th birthday.

You will need to notify the Child Benefit office in Newcastle, where your son will be continuing his education, so basic course details and address of college. This will ensure Child Benefit will run on smoothly.

There is also Child Tax Credits. You will also need to these, the transition is more of a stop and a start, but don't forget, else you might find that he has been removed from the claim.

Finally, Remember to apply for EMA. It is not taken into account with IS or HB

  • Hi Munchie
Thanks for that, but as i am claming IS all ready don't i get child tax credits all ready incluied in my payments, as i can remeber some time ago that we recived a letter stating that the IS part will now be paid by child tax credit. Did not hear any more, so i am assuming tax credits pay the childrens part of the IS and the DSS pay the rest, i could be wrong. When i got a letter stating how your money is worked out, i can't remeber of any tax credits being on there.

    regards

  • That's correct.
When child tax credits was introduced, children came off the parents income support claim.
So, in my case, I get income support based on a single adult, and a premium as I care for a disabled child, this is paid every other week
I then get my child tax credits which also has the disabled child premiums added, paid weekly.
As both my children received DLA, I also get Carers Allowance.

  • hi,Munchie
I am married with 2 children, but we get paid only fortnightly and the disabled child premiuim is incluied with our total sum of Income Support and thats why i said when i get a letter saying changes in your benfits, it does not say Tax credits on it. It say income support for you, wife, child and a preium for having a ill child. And the DLA is paid monthly.
So does that mean tax credit is automaly added to my income support, but if thats the case surely it would state Tax credits on the letter has money comming in

For all new claims for the last few years ctc is paid instead of a premium for children(the family premium of i/s was also abolished for new claims),therefore children arent part of these claims for i/s purposes and family allowance isnt counted as income, there are still a small number of existing claimants who are on the old system, and they are usually moved across to the new if there is a break in the claim,or eventually all will be moved across(this should have happened by now,and i`m surprised it hasnt)
