Apologies if in the wrong forum.
My wife has £260 in her payapl account after having a purge of kids toys and stuff and selling on ebay, and we decided to transfer funds back into our bank account.
When she tried to log into paypal, she could not access her account. We rang paypal and after going around in circles managed to find out that the account had been closed and the money (all of it) had been transferred to Ebay International AG. Paypal seem very reluctant to accept that my wife has not shut the account or transferred the money to Ebay International AG. They say the the money was for ebay seller fees but her actuall bill for sept was £11 (as per her ebay account).
We feel like we are going around in cirlces here, as Paypal tell us to speak to ebay to get the money back - paypal seem oblivious to the fact that someone could hack the account and keep insisting that she has shut the account or I have (her husband). None of the call centre staff are english and we have spent around 5 hours on the phone with no resolution. Because her account has been shut down we cannoy complete a dispute form online either???
Anyone got any suggestions????
Any help appreciated.
Carl

If someone had hacked the account, why would they transfer the money to ebay? Surely they'd just withdraw it to their own bank account / Paypal account
Back on MSE after a 5 year hiatus.

Have you still got access to the ebay account, personally I would be checking in there first to see if there isn't anything odd about fees outstanding.
Whilst you do try and sort this out I would also strongly recommend that you go to the techie board and get talked through a complete and deep clena on the pC. You either have something nasty on your PC, or you have compromised your aco!!!! in some other way either falling for a phish or by leaving paypal without logging out properly on a shared PC.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Yeah. That does seem odd. If the scammer used it to pay off his/her fees I think that would mean they are easy to trace.
Are paypal/ebay not the same company but in different areas.
Contact ebay. There is a live help thing to contact them. Did you find out what the ebay id was of the scammer? I think though that this lies with paypal to fix not ebay. They are the ones that let the money be removed.0 -
Please don't think this is an accusation, but have you had previous issues with Paypal where a buyer put in a dispute and there were no funds in your account for Paypal to 'hold'. Could it be, that this new income has gone towards an old problem?0
-
No - no old problems or anything outstanding, will give ebay a try to sort it out but everyone at paypal seems to think that fraudulent activity is the last thing that could have happened?
Will try and do a clean of the pc in question also - cheers!0 -
come back and let us know how you sort it.
Are you in a shared house? Could someone else have used the computer to pay their own ebay fees? Same ip address but different sellers could paid by paypal could look like everything is normal.0 -
got cash back eventually! They admitted someone had fraudulently accessed account!!!0

how did they manage to access the account,0 -
I'd be more inclined to believe Ebay/paypal made a cork up and found they could not get away with the error. Therefore it had to be a hacked account, bet they won't say how.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Paypal have the facility to track exactly when that transaction took place. They are also able to tell exactly when you logged in and out of your account.
If you didn't authorise the transaction, and are sure you were not logged in when it happened, ask Paypal to check the timings. They did this for me recently when a dispute was closed (but not by me). Once they realised I wasn't in the account at the time the authorisation was given, they reversed it.
HTH.
Merry Christmas, I hope you get it sorted!
