council housing credit check?

Options
I was just wondering if a credit check is made when applying for council housing?
Never regret anything that made you smile ;)

  • No. I shoudn't think so!
  • Local Authority housing is allocated according to need, allegedly, not according to whether the tenants pass a credit-check or not. One could argue that those with the poorest credit-records could be those most in need in an open market.

Not yet, but there maybe after a new conservative government comes in....

However (IIRC) initially on a new council tenancy you are on an "Introductory" deal for I think 12 or 18 months.. and if you don't behave (in all senses) and sensible (*) council will either tell you to leave or start having heavy conversations with you. After the "Introductory" tenancy you then go on to "secure" and you're basically with one of the safest (for Tenant) tenancy you can get..

Nope but they request details of your financial situation if offered a house, our does.

  • I don't know about councils but I'm aware that some Housing Associations do credit checks.

It is to do with evaluating any potentials risks to the success of the tenancy and not a case of refusing to offer a tenancy to anyone with a bad credit history but rather making sure that the right support is put into place from day one so they can ensure the tenant can both pay the rent and deal with existing debts
