I stupidly bought my ticket today from Raileasy for next Friday (16 October) for the 12.49 Barmouth to Stourbridge Junction before checking on here and now realise that I could have done it without a booking fee or credit card fee. I've paid £13 for the ticket and £1.66 in fees. Done in a bit of a panic really as I need it posting to me. I've now found out that National Express East Coast don't charge the fees so I can get it at least £1.66 cheaper in future and I've seen the ticket priced at £11 for future weeks. Tickets can be bought at the Tourist Information Centre here as it is an unmanned station but all I was offered yesterday was £36.50 single for next Friday.

I am having to make this journey every Friday for between 6 and 12 weeks as part of the journey to visit my husband in hospital in Bristol, it will be outward journey only (I'm getting a lift back) and just one adult.

My station doesn't have one of those ticket machines where you can collect your ticket, and the station is not in the drop down list of stations to collect your ticket at that some websites have.

Is there a cheaper way of doing this? I'm not sure if buying a senior citizens rail card will be any good as I never normally use the train.

A senior railcard will cost you £26 (less 10% at the moment if bought online - promo 'senior10' I think). With it an £11 single will cost you £7.25 The £36.50 comes down to £24.10

So if you make enough journeys it's worth it

Thanks for the code for the senior's railcard dzug, I didn't know about that so very useful. I don't intend paying the £36.50 fare, I can get the future tickets early enough now to get it at either £11 or £13. I'll do my sums and see how it works out.
