Selling mobile phone

I'm considering selling my mobile phone, its not a fancy currently on the market one, but still fetches around £30 - £50 from what i have seen on ebay.

I'm really wary of selling it on ebay though, how best can i protect myself?

I've listed it on my local gumtree 1st in hope i don't need to list it on ebay.

However if i do, what do i need to do to protect myself from being scammed? More looking to buyer claiming it doesn't work and filing claim with paypal than anything as i will use recorded or special delivery to post.

Thanks for any tips :D

Set your buyer requirements ultra-tight - this will ensure only bona-fide UK members will be able to bid. Have a look here for the settings - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=15101411&postcount=20

To be honest though, the majority of scammers will target the higher end phones. There is very little you can do to stop the "i received an empty box/duff phone" scam, but in reality is so rare given the vast number of phones being sold on ebay at any one time.

Just make a note of the IMEI number before you sell it - press *#06# and it will display.

you mention posting, I would say ALWAYS use Special Delivery, it will only cost around £6 for a phone and will save a lot of problems.

Lately I have been selling phones with a BIN or offer listing. I normally BIN a little higher than I hope for and have always sold on an offer of around what I wanted.

  • I assume youve checked places like envirofone to see whether its not worth selling there first, if you dont expect much cash for it?

I sold an old phone to one of the companies that buy them..can't remember the name but I got it from the referrers board. I got about £8 less than they were fetching on ebay but I worked out with 10% FVFs , listing fees and other possibilities the money in my hand worked out the same.

The company I used also allowed recorded delivery for items under £40, and as I sold for a fraction under £39 I used recorded as then I at least had confirmation that it was handed in over the PO counter, so that was another saving as I would have used special on ebay.

  • Thanks for the tips.

Yes i have checked websites to see if its worth selling on that 1st, its not to be honest as mazuma mobile will only give me £15 cash or £16.50 in an argos voucher. I was hoping it would give me more as have used it in the past for my OH's mobile that was faulty and got good money for it.

Searched ebay and the 'standard' colour is fetching £30, mines different in the sense that i bought a different cover for it and had a shop fit it. (really annoying to fit and it has 4 cover pieces to it thats held together by tiny screws). So im hoping it will fetch a bit more with it being a different colour.

Should i sell for £70 on gumtree, sounds like a scam but someone has offered me this to pay into paypal to post to West Africa to a friend as a surprise and they can't collect as they're currently in Paris. Sounds suspicious but can't see how the scam goes ahead...

    It's a 100% scam, seach Nigerian or 419 scam.

You'll get a fake paypal email telling you that funds are on hold until you supply a tracking number.

Even if you sell on ebay it never hurts to put a not eon the auciton that you are aware of the 419 scams and will not ship overseas.

That's another point as well really, stick to UK only, mobiles over £39 are not covered against loss on any RM overseas services.
