DRO - £50 surplus for a year?

i still dont understand about this surplus £50 thing.
i understand that you must not have this amount surplus when applying for the DRO but if you arent paying debts anymore then surely some people have more than this as surplus:confused:
have i got it all wrong?lol
you must not have 50 pounds surplus when doing soa and for a whole year ,even when debts are not being paid?sorry if im sounding thick but maybe someone can advise me.thankyou.

    I thought you had to have no more than £50.00 surplus per month left

    Thats right nichart - its less than £50 surplus income per month after normal household expenses.
