£5 late payment fine BT

My sister has just received her latest line rental bill with BT including £5 surcharge for late payment. She doesn't pay direct debit and said she paid within a few days of the due date last quarter. She changed her call supplier last year and maybe now she may be tempted to change the line supplier to. Is this £5 levy mentioned in any of the BT contracts or is it just one of their throwaway charges.

i had the same thing and i checked the back of the bill and it states this could be levied but no mention is made of when it applies.
As with the op i will be moving providers as it appears that BT are just trying to raise profits.
Anyone raised the issue with BT yet?Mark Hughes' blue and white army0 -

Instead of changing line rental supplier (which will probably not save much [if anything] and which will seriously restrict her choices for routing her calls more cheaply), why not encourage her to sign up for DD. It'll save the possibility of future late payment fees and will save £1 per month on the line rental.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

BT only charge the late payment charge if they don't receive payment within 7/10 calendar days of sending a Red Reminder. (not the original bill)
The Red Reminder should also include a message forewarning customers of a charge as a result of late payment according to http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/current/docs/Misc.boo/14379.htm
