  • I have never cooked it so was interested in this thread. Thanks for the ideas. The only time I have had it was when I was in Australia and it was divine. Nothing like that horrible rubber frozen stuff.

Brush with oilive oil..sprinkle with paprika, salt and pepper. Get a nice hot grill pan and fry up.

    OR

    something more off the wall...

    CHINESE SQUID BALLS

1/2 kg. Squid cut into rings
    400 grams Cooked shrimp
    4 Cloves garlic chopped
    1 Egg yolk
    tin of Water chestnuts, chopped
    1 cup Chicken stock
    1 spoonful of ginger grated
    6 spoonfulls of Peanut oil

Poach squid rings and tentacles in boiling water for 30 seconds. Drain and set aside to cool. Saute garlic in frying pan over low heat in 1 spoonful of oil until lightly browned. Combine squid, garlic, the egg yolk and the rest of the dry (shrimp too) ingredients in a food processor. add 1 or 2 spoonfulls of oil as you go. Stop when the mixture forms a large ball. Remove and form into a dozen or so balls. Heat 3 spoonfulls of oil in a heavy frying pan. When hot, add squid balls and brown lightly on all sides. Turn down heat, add stock and cover. Simmer for five minutes. Serve on toothpicks with soy sauce or use as fishballs in soup.

I had a really nice dish from Wiatrose and saved the label:
    http://www.ocado.com/webshop/product/Menu-From-Waitrose-Calamari-With-Chilli--Lime-For-2/54437011

squid, lime, fire roasted corriander & chilli rub (which is corriander, red chilli, sea salt, brown sugar) butter.

Put butter in pan, plus a little oil and fry squid with marinade on it for a couple of minutes, so not tough, squeeze lime juice on it.

It was £2.99 in the shops, but a fresh squid body is about 60p, so Im going to have a go myself.

    How do you cook yours?

Edit - I just had it for lunch with some nice bread - I reackon you need 2 squid bodies a person, cut into rings.

    Hi claire,

That sounds fabulous, I think I might give it a go. What did you serve it with?

We have an existing thread that should give you some more ideas:

Squid !!! How do you do yours ??

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the recipes and ideas in one place.

Cook it very very quickly! and if you are buying whole squid ask the fishmonger to show you how to prepare it!

I use it in a sort of Mediterranean style fish stew/soup thing. I use the squid tube, sliced into rings and pop it in right at the end of cooking and serve immediately.

Very cheap, healthy protein source. I buy the squid tube, frozen from the Chinese supermarket slice it while it's still semi frozen and plop it straight in.

Nothing like fresh, lightly battered baby squid deep fried and served with a great squeeze of fresh lemon and a glass of chilled white wine in a Greek island beachside taverna either! Where's my suitcase?!

I love squid! I like it in paella along with whatever other seafood I can get hold of (usually mussels if they're in season or clams and king prawns).

It's actually really easy to prepare but unfortunately my local fishmonger doesn't often have whole squid and just sells frozen bodies so I rarely get the tentacles, which is the best bit :(
