I had turned of Defender - I don't know if I run Sidebar
Perhaps I need to run that hi jack to check what is on0 -
Do you have any further information when it fails such as error messages or codes.
Also check the event viewer for errors.
It may also be worth turning off Automatic Updates before installing manually.0 -
"Installation was not successful. A system error prevented the service pack from installing.." Then it goes on to recommend System Readiness - which I have tried. System Readiness seems to help with update KB947821Do you have any further information when it fails such as error messages or codes.

Even Viewer - (today) "The Windows update "Update for Windows (KB947821)" could not be installed because of an error: 2149842966 "" (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "C:\Users\Desktop\system readiness tool\Windows6.0-KB947821-v5-x86.msu" ")"
Looks like it is trying to install KB947821 which, as far as I can tell, has been installed

..speaking of Windows Defender - programs displayed as non classified are
Acer e AP Launch Tool
ALaunchClient.exe
WR_PopuUp
3 Acer reminders
PCMMeidaSharing.exe
SDII Application
SysMonitor
Acer eDataSecurity Management
(all this acer stuff - brings me back to considering the 2 restore discs)0 -
If you use the restore DVD's, then it won't cure the non classified stuff - it just means Microsoft haven't put them on the list. They are preinstalled programs, so will most likely be on the backup.
As far as the update problem goes, you are getting closer to those DVD's. There are reports of a cure by running "sfc /scannow" from an elevated command prompt (right click, run as administrator) or by running an inplace upgrade:eek:. I think you would need a Vista DVD for SFC (System File Checker) to pull files from, which I guess is where MS were leading you. Can you borrow one from somewhere to give it a go.0 -
Really on considering using the DVDs to sort the update not unclassified stuff (just wondered if anyone had any input on that list of stuff).
I don't know of anyone who has a DVD which I could borrow.0 -
Does the Readiness Tool create CheckSur.log file in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS
If so, it will be a text file, so can you post the contents.
Edit - or maybe not as it could be a big file. Are there any obvious errors in there.0 -
under Checking Packages there are several lines of this (approx 25) CBS MUM Missing 0x00000002 servicing\packages\Package_132_for_KB967723~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.7.mum

It is Explorer 8. I have contacted Microsoft and was advised that I need "The Windows Vista DVD".
To go through all my drivers and either update to latest or undate to a previous version sounds a nightmare - might be easier to uninstall everything
I'm not really sure what to do next
I posted an extract from some logs as davb indicated - I'd be interested to hear any comments0 -
The log you posted doesn't give any obvious clues - not to me at least. Checking some of the stuff from it and your other log shows some mentions of similar problems, but nobody with a real fix. People have KB947821 installing multiple times & still showing as needed to be installed. The log does mention KB967723 as a possible problem so it may be worth downloading here and installing manually - it may just unblock the service pack install
There are also suggestions of installing the standalone service pack 2 in safe mode, so could be worth a go.
SFC is an option, but you need the Vista DVD, and it seems to have mixed results.
For an inplace upgrade you would also need the DVD.0
