Replacing wired doorbell chime

Hi
I wonder if someone can help. As the title suggests I would like to replace my door bell chime unit as I'm in the throes of redecorating and it's a bit big and ugly and I'm not sure what size unit I need to buy. The transformer says it's a 4-8-12V, 1.75 amp one (morphy richards type MR5). Does this mean it's 4 or 8 or 12 v ?
One of the sites I've been looking to buy from says "All transformer powered models must operate bettween 8v - 12v ac and be supplied with 1 amp transformer " so is my transformer too big for these?
I know I could replace with a wireless one but thought I could use the system that's already there , also I'm in an old house so would prefer something that's not too modern looking
Can anyone advise
Thanks

Thanks scrounger, though I'm not sure what tapping it is being used at at the moment, and I don't know how to find out- can't see anything on the door chime unit to indicate this. So from what you say am I correct in thinking I should be able to connect a 8 V 1 amp chime to this transformer. Though sounds like I'll have to get an electrician in rather than be able to do a straight swap
Thanks

The existing transfomer should have a terminal cover which lets you access the screw terminals to select the secondary output - 0,4,8,12v and these are usually arranged in voltage order.
Can you follow the wire form the chime unit to the transformer?
Can you see a removable cover or terminals on the tranformer where these wire go?
Are there any markings on the transformer eg indicating 4/8/12?
Could you post a picture of the tranformer?
