Can I get Santander Cards to pay my bank charges?

At the start of this year I got an engagement ring and didn't have to pay anything for 6 months, the woman in the shop asked if I wanted to pay the full balance or pay the minimum monthly fee, I opted for the minimum.
6 months later Santander tried to take the full balance which was returned and I was charged, I spoke to Santander and told that I was supposed to be paying monthly, they apologized and that they would update their system, about 2 weeks later they try and take the full payment again, I got charged.
I spoke to my bank and they said to get the card company to refund me for the charges, is it really possible to do this as it was their mistake and not mine?
