OK

We have a PC wired up to our internet and we need to get a wireles router as we are moving the PC out of the lounge where the connection is and my lodger needs access in her room for her laptop.

Happy to buy what we need - for the cheapest price possible!! Anything with cashback preferred!!

What do I need? & where do I get it from

Sorry to be dumb!
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

    Firstly,

Are you on ADSL or Cable service? Different type routers for different type services. If your on ADSL is it a USB modem? If your on cable you will prolly have a usb/ethernet modem.

Routers for cable have LAN ports and a WAN port.

Routers for ADSL have LAN ports and a ADSL port.

If you already have a modem that will plug into router you can get away with spending less, if you have a USB modem you will need a router with a modem built in (more expensive)

I can't offer exact results as per the previous poster, depends on whether it's cable or straight DSL

    However.

    https://www.ebuyer.co.uk
    https://www.dabs.com
    https://www.scan.co.uk

    for starters

    Ebay (natch)

Expect to pay about £40-45 from a shop/online I'd say, perhaps less on ebay (but watch out for postage!)

Dont forget that if the laptop doesnt have wireless built in, you'll need an adaptor, and if you need to connect the PC and it's maybe just on a modem at the monent, you'll need some "cat 5" cable between PC and router (should be between £2-5 depending on length, dont bother with the "super gold contact" rubbish sold by some shops, it's really not required).

Generally a good router will come with a built in firewall, which generally means you can remove your software firewall and get a small performance boost!.

Most importantly, when you get the router - TURN ON THE SECURITY! - email me if you need advice on that when the time comes.

ADSL runs through a BT phone line.

Cable doesnt run through BT line.
