Boots and Mothercare vouchers are a great idea.0

I did something similar for my sister, although it was heavily weighted towards 'New Mum' as I'd bought loads of clothes for my first ever niece anyway.
Just general treats like body lotion, lippy, some foot spray to ease aching muscles etc - she loved it.0 -
Parenting / mother and baby magazine subscription.
Food parcels / prepared meals - I loved it when friends turned up with food or meals. Perfect.
Voucher for a photo session with the baby.
Chocolate and a DVD - I would of loved this too.
I would avoid clothes and teddies - we had loads of all of this and sadly some of it never got worn as there was just so much.

When I had my DD (now 5) I really appreciated practical stuff like some ironing done!! Also if buying clothes or nappies buy them in a bigger size. 6-12 or 12-18 if poss. New Mum will really appreciate it cause all the cutsie new baby stuff will have ran out or got too small. HTH.

My DD was a few weeks early and tiny as a result, so none of the newborn stuff we'd bought fitted, and DH had to dash out to get some early baby stuff. If your friend's baby is smaller than expected she may appreciate a few pretty but comfy babygrows? Otherwise I'd definitely stay clear of clothing for the baby.
I'd have loved a Moby Wrap for DD - that would be my number one present for a new baby/mum. They're around £30, I bought mine from treehuggermums and it's the absolute most useful single baby item I had.0 -
Thanks all, this is really helpful. I've done some frozen meals and will pop into town later today to have a look for some useful things.
I did consider a baby sling, but they've already got one - handy really as the buggy doesn't arrive until this week!
NBirdy - the baby was 8lbs 1oz, so no need to worry about her being tiny

I think the babysitting and housework vouchers is the best idea I've read on here. Think what fun it would be to design and print them out and make into a little booklet to be redeemed at a time of Mum's choosing. A fantastic idea! Clever Daska!0

Hi all,
Thanks for your suggestions, there were some really great ones in there. In the end I asked what they still needed/wanted, and they've been recommended this bear: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Prince-Lionheart-Slumber-Bear-Plus/dp/B000L3ISWI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=baby&qid=1255798101&sr=8-1 and made up some shepherds pie and sausage casserole for them to stick in the freezer (which they said had been a god send
) and then some banana bread too.
So they seemed chuffed - whilst I wanted to help in a practical way I also wanted to get something for the baby that they would want, so job done I reck.

Something nice for mum to pamper herself with, my friends gave me a lush set and my OH bought me a massage voucher. Both were heaven! A photo album is also a nice idea and maybe a disposable camera if they do not already have a nice camera. The batch cooking sounds perfect and I am sure they will love that. I took a friend round a whole load of home baking so that they had nibbles to give visitors without having to go shopping.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0
