Item damaged in transit to buyer - what to do?

Hi All,

I need some advice.

I've sold some items and they left me in perfect condition, well packaged etc but they arrived at the buyer's address damaged and bent.

Do they claim to royal mail or do I have to do that?

Please help as I'm at a bit of a loss as to know what to do,

Cheers

EJ

It's upto the seller to make a claim against Royal Mail unfortunatly, I think in a previous post MSE member "soolin" mentioned it can take upto 3 weeks to receive a cheque from Royal Mail if they approve your claim

Thanks for that - so do I need to get the items back so i can show royal mail or do i just make a claim?

Also, does this mean i need to fully refund buyer (inc p&p)? Seems v unfair that i end up out of pocket because of royal mail as have been told they only refund actual cost not extras - is that right?

    Cheers

    No worries

I don't think you need to get the items back but just go to your local post office and you need to ask for a claim form which should be entitled "damaged, delayed or lost Uk and international mail" which you need to complete and add your receipt or proof of postage etc and anything to prove the value of your goods i.e. printout of paypal receipt or ebay auction page details.

Have not made a claim yet but I believe they only refund the cost of the item and nothing else unfortunatly but I maybe wrong

I am in a similar situation whereby I sent something by 1st class recorded 2 weeks ago and it still has not been signed for but I have not heard from the buyer yet and may have to claim if it has gone missing

Well I was recently on the receiving end of goods being damaged in the post whilst being delivered to me, I ordered some ink for my printer and the ink had leaked all through the parcel, I sent a message to the seller telling them what happened and they were more than helpfull asking me to send back the remainder of the ink and they will send out replacements straight away. My view is that its your responsibility to make sure the goods arrive to the buyer in good working order even if that means replacing them if damaged. Then you can just claim from the royal mail in the end anyway.

It depends on what was sent and whether or not it was covered.
If you sent breakables on normal post you wont get anything back, but you should reimburse the buyer all the same.

Personally I'd want proof that the item is damaged, like a picture. You don't mention that you have proof so I'd ask for some. We had a buyer try it on saying that something was damaged but when asked for proof they wouldn't supply it, even asking them to return the item and we would pay for the postage they wouldn't do it.
