What to do with old cards?

hi,

I'm trying to sort out all my paperwork and have come across some credit cards etc which I am unsure whether I should just cut up or should close or even what their for!!

I have a faith card - probably got over 2 years ago as this would be the last special pair of shoes I have bought.

Nectar card - not even sure what this is? credit card/store card or rewards thing?

WHSmith Clubcard - not a clue!!

Amazon mastercard - obviously a credit card. Is it worth closing or should I just keep it, Ive never even used it. I may have some points on here although I dont know how to redeem them.

Dorothy Perkins - store card, nothing on it. Is there any benefit to me closing the account?

Thanks

Jen

Nectar card - go to www.nectar.com and register your card. You can collect points on this and use it to buy from various sites or save money on the till at Argos or Sainsburys.

    WhSmith clubcard - now discontinued.

    No idea on the others.

    Hi Jen.

It's a generally accepted fact that having too much available credit that you're not using can hurt your chances of credit in the future.

If I were you, I'd close the Faith, DP, and Amazon cards. The Nectar and WHSmith cards aren't credit, they're just points cards, so there's no harm to leaving them open.

Depending on when you took this out, it's probably already closed. If it's the one issued by Halifax, then Amazon broke their relationship with them some time ago. All accounts were switched to standard Halifax cards, and any Amazon points outstanding would have been emailed to you at the time.

If it's the new Amazon Mastercard (issued by Bank of America) then it would be a fairly new card, and the decision to keep or dispose would depend on how often you shop at Amazon really.

The Amazon one is a Mastercard and I guess I could keep it as I do love Amazon. The faith and dp's I havent a clue on how to go about closing them ..... In fact I have just looked the card conpanies online (as telephoning them is out for me as I only have a mobile line) and i'm thinking that I could just cut them up and just post them to the HQ with a letter stating that I wish to cut all contact with them - sound good?

    Thanks

Hi i am not sure if you understood Eydon's post, apologies if I am wrong. Unless you applied for your amazon mastercard literally in the last few weeks, its more than likely the amazon mastercard you have got is the old one which was issued in partnership with the Halifax (the old amazon credit card was a mastercard too, think it was blue in colour with blue squares design). This would have now been closed, and if i remember correctly, they would have sent you a halifax branded credit card as a replacement if your account is still active.
