I work with adults with learning difficulties and show them how to use computers.
I have had a question asked of me today which I wasn't sure of the answer. One of our guys wants to use his laptop to look at !!!!!!. Whilst explaining about all of the problems with viruses etc ( he is very good with a pc) he is still entitled to look at !!!!!! so the best thing i can do is give his support workers guides as to how to look after his computer.
Question : Is !!!!!! legal to download? Obvious things ignored, animals, children etc. He will be wanting "normal" !!!!!!, but we werent sure of the laws or even where to find them
Any ideas?!
Thanks

Is it his own private computer???
I work with people with learning disablities too and although none want to look at !!!!!! i know our internet access is monitored, but that is computers we use at our resource centre.
Staff have been disciplined for looking at sites they that the council don't find it necessary for us to look at including games sites. Although we think this is unfair if our service users chose to look at these sites it would be us who would be disiplined as it is us who are supervising.0 -
same applies. We arent part of the council, we're private but in this situation, it his his private laptop at his own home.
The way I see it is, hes entitled to look, he wants to look, I might as well make it as safe and legal as possible.embarrassed to say I used to work for barclays..sorry0 -
Ok without giving you an exhaustive list of what is or isnt allowed I can give you an overview of whats illegal in the UK.
Anything to do with animals, kids, waste products, anything inducing pain, any rape/murder scenes. However even though "normal" scenes of consenting adults having intercourse etc are legal however allowing people below 18 to view such materials, is illegal.
As far as sites, well Im not going to advertise them on here, due to children looking at MSE, however if you want pointing in the right direction PM me and I'll try and help, by the way im not some perv who's life revolves around this sort of thing but the training involved with my job brings us into contact with !!!!!! dvd's, sites etc.
All the best

I think the bigger picture here is not is the !!!!!! illegal but due to the person having LD and having support provided (you mention support workers)they will fall under the Vulnerable Adult Abuse polices and procedures, which, unless the correct procedures are followed, could land you and support staff in deep trouble and potentially being placed onto a POVA register.
The looking at !!!!!! and downloading (certain types) is not illegal, however; as someone is needing to supply the addresses this could been identified as abuse unless the Care Manager has agreed and Care Plan has been changed to include what the providing agency is going to do.
Just to let others know the full impact of the Vulnerable Adult Abuse laws (which actually stifles a lot of people with LD) showing someone with LD page 3 of the SUN can be seen as sexual abuse especially if the person has a severe LD and cannot express thier views (no communication abilities to say if they mind or not) whereas, if the person picked up the paper and showed you the picture it would be alright.
Speak to the Care manager before proceding anywhere further and let them make the decision...afterall, that's what they are there forWelcome, rogerramjet.
