Car Tax / Expiry

If the car tax says 05/06 does this mean that it has to be replaced by a particular date in May? Or Is any time in May ok?

What happens if it doesn't get taxed by then?

Can the owner get into trouble (if so what?) if the car is reported to the DVLA for having an out of date tax disc and STILL being driven?

Thanks

Your tax disc lasts until the 31st May. Any day now you should get a notice from the DVLA to tell you that your new tax is due, how much it will be and what to do. You can use the same notice to declare your car off the road if you need to.

You have NO time after the 31st to not tax your vehicle. You are obliged to keep it continuously taxed or declared off the road. If you do not tax it in time, you are liable for two penalties. The first is a penalty notice from DVLA with a fine. You will be expected to pay the unpaid tax as well. These can be issued at any time once the tax falls due and is not paid. In reality, they are not issued in the first 14 days so if your car has failed its MOT for example you have a short period in which to get it fixed. After the 14 days, you could get the fine.

Secondly, it is an offence to drive a vehicle on the road without tax. There is no period of grace on this. You may however drive your untaxed vehicle to a PRE BOOKED MOT test and back again. Otherwise, you commit an absolute offence (one to which there is no defence) and will get a penalty notice from the police as well.

Also not having a tax disc may invalidate your insurance too.

Yeah you have until the last day of the month to tax your car but you are able to do it anytime from the 15th of the month onwards.
