Incapacity Benefit - when to stop.

Hi all, i am currently on long term incapacity benefit due to having cancer,i have had quite a lot of tratment in the past year(8 months of chemo/4 weeks of radiotherapy)and it has taken its toll on me.
In march i got the all clear (thank god)but i am very tired still and even if i hoover 1 room at home i am constantly sweating and very hot.My family are saying i should be looking for work now that i have the all clear(even though i am not fully fit).my question is should i inform the benefits place that i have the all clear and would they stop my incapacity benefit.
Many thanks, Libby.

Incapacity Benefit is when you are

unfit for work and clearly you are not fit for work,if you want some

re-assurances speak to your doctor and look for welfare rights in your area,[put it into a search engine

google] they are very helpful and it will cost you nothing, don`t be

pressurised by family and friends. !!

    Hello Libby,

If you feel you are better you should contact the benefits agency but you are not obliged to tell them you have the all clear. It sounds as though you are still unwell so may still qualify. If you contact them and explain your situation they are unlikely to stop your benefit unless you asked them to but they may send you an IB50 form to complete and call you for a medical.
  • Very pleased to hear you've now got the all clear. Why not talk to your GP about your tiredness and how fit you are right now and when you will be fully fit and capable of working.

Great to hear you have the allclear. You need time to recover both physically and mentally and should stay on benifit untill you feel well enough your self. Do not feel presurised by your family to lok for work .you are fully intitled to continue to receive benifits. They will write to you when you need to be reassessed. Even then you might feel better but the Doctors feel you still need more time not working. Enjoy your time now relaxing and enjoying your life I am sure after all your treatment you deserve some quality time.

    Dont worry about it.
Your GP has to sign you as being fit for work so you can come off the benefit & it dosent seem you are yet.
    take care

:grouphug: I'm so glad you've had the all clear. I think you need time now to assess and evaluate what has happened to you over the past few months. It's been such a traumatic time for you that I doubt you would be able to concentrate on work.

I think your family are well meaning and they feel the urge to get back to normality, and you working would add to their normality. You though must look after yourself. Don't feel guilty, you are not fully well. As a tax payer I'm happy to pay taxes to support people like yourself who cannot work because there but for the grace of God go I.

Ask your family to respect you to assess when you are fit for work.

    Take care.

  • Happy news on the all clear, but lets not forget what you've been through here!! You're bound to be feeling not 100% considering what you've been through!!! You should take it easy, don't push yourself, you'll know when you're fully fit, regardless of what freinds and family say. If, when you feel a bit better you can approach your local jobcentre and speak to either a dea-disability employment advisor, or an ibpa- it depends where you live, whether you have jobcentre + or not. There are loads of incentives to help people back into work, you can do work trials- where you could maybe have a bash at working a few hours a day, to see how you get on. Without your bens being changed.Maybe you have a hobby that you'd like to turn into a career? You can test trade, honestly when you're ready there's lots of help to get you back into it. Another option that is well worth considering for someone in your situation in the Shaw Trust, I think they're national, they can help you with allsorts, if you need to retrain, need £ to buy new interview outfit, job grants and so on- they're subsidised by the govt to help people so they'll (or they should) go all out to help you.
don't push yourself too early, you've been through a hell of a lot, get yourself recouperated fully, you know when you're ready, no one else!! Good luck, and try and take it easy!
