Eon direct debit-too high

Currently I am with Eon and just moved to Price Protection V3 from the beginning of this month after Price Protection 17 dual fuel finished at the end of last month.

Have finally decided to pay by monthly direct debit after previously paying a quarterly bill so went to sign up to Fixonline v3 after checking how much I could save on Uswitch.

My consumption over the last 4 bills is gas 24332kwh and electricity 5421kwh and Uswitch gave me an annual combined bill of £1594 and I should save approx. £316 by going on to Fixonline v3 tariff giving an annual spend of £1278.

I thought that sounds good so started to sign up until it came to the monthly direct debit of £154!!!!!!!!!

A direct debit over 12 months at £154 would be £1848 as an annual spend nearly £600 more than Uswitch calculated, surely that can not be correct?

Is there any reasoning behind this as I am not happy with this?

I think eon try to get you to be aroud zero in the spring - as you use more in the winter they may be looking to get more now (only looking 6 months ahead), then reassess it in the spring when it will be a full year.

PS - the name can't be a coincidence....
  • This has cropped up before and it depends upon when you change.

I am electric only and calculate my consumption based on 600 units a month April to September and 1200 units a month for October to March. Now forget economy 7 for a minute but my average is 900 a month.

If I was paying for 900 a month from October, I'd be going into debt with the supplier by 300 units a month until April and then I'd claw my way back to zero at 300 units a month but only get to zero in September the next year. Effectively, my supplier would be lending me money.

In reverse, changing in April would see me paying for 900 units but only consuming 600, thus overpaying.

I suspect Eon do not want you to go into deficit and they want you to pay for your current usage now and will then look for you to go into credit during the summer.

    Hi jackswan :hello:

SwanJon is correct, we do like to review the payments in spring.

It is also recommended to have a credit on your account going in to the winter months, as this will go towards your larger bills over the cold months.

If you don't have much credit or a debt on your account at the moment, then the Direct Debit will be set higher to ensure your not left with a debt after the winter period.

This will then be reviewed in the spring.
