Yes of course if i had been the correct distance away, but the people in front were dithering about so much and not moving with the flow of trafiic, that i did infact end up being up their *rse,

    Erm yeah.

So you were driving right up someone's behind (which is intimidating, dangerous and rude) whilst they had kids sat in the backseat. They then braked (which is something you should learn more about) and you failed to stop. As a result they are claiming for injuries (that your mechanic mate says can't have happened because he's also a doctor).

Please tell me how they are the ones in the wrong?

I think people who drive right up people's behinds are worse than those who exagerate claims. You don't get anywhere faster, and if the car in front has to brake for a person or cyclist etc, you'll probably just end up knocking them into it.

    tldr: OP is a moron.

We bumped the back of the car in front whilst queuing to get into a new branch of John Lewis. The traffic was moving very slowly and the person in front suddenly braked hard. We shouldn't have hit them but it happened.

We exchanged details and the driver and an older woman got back into their undamaged car.

A couple of weeks later they made a claim with our insurance company and mysteriously a load of children had appeared in the car all of whom were injured. None of them had been in the car at the time of the accident.

Unfortunately our insurance company paid out rather than fight it but since then I've been advised to always take photographs at the scene of a bump, even if it's on your cameraphone.
