I've had my number plate cloned :(

I bought a Megane through Autotrader early September.

This week, I've received penalty notices for non payment of fuel, stopping on a red route, and non payment of the Congestion charge. The police don't know how long I will receive these fines for if they dont catch the scumbag.

I can't help but think that if you're a scumbag criminal and want to clone a number plate the easiest way to do it is to use Autotrader - just search for the car you want to drive around for free in and find an advert where the number plate is readable.

Please could you bear this in mind when selling your car online - Obscure your number plate, it's so easy!

The DVLA can assign you a new number plate in this instance. Contact them quoting the police ref number.

I never obscure my number plate as they can just go to any car park and write it down there, they could even write the VIN number down on some cars.

I think he means obscure the number plate on the photo you give to autotrader.

  • I always thought the same, but they dont even need to leave the house to get a number plate by using the internet, why make it easier for them?

Sorry yeah my post was not clear.
Yeah when I post up a pic of my car online I never hide the plate for the reason mentioned.

Also for classified ads I always think there is something dodgy about the car when they try and hide the number plate.

What you want to do is put a cloned number plate on your car then if it gets cloned it won't come back on you ;):D

I have had the same in the past, I got speeding tickets, parking tickets and jumping a red light ticket all in Liverpool in the space of a week. I was in the lucky position that a policeman lived opposite from me and he could confirm that the car hadn't moved off my driveway for 8 months as it was a banger that I was supposed to be trying to do up so that was easily sorted.

  • thanks hoyles10, My dad suggested I own a rarer car, for example a DB5, and my husband has suggested a private plate. Hardly MSE!!

Few cloners will use a car in the area that the owner of the orginal car opreates so they will try and use ones far away and people selling their cars make it very easy to get the detials.

I'd go for a DB9 myself put it's all personal preference. If you do get a private plate though maybe you could get C1 ONE :D

Seriously though I do hope you get it all sorted out because it really worried me when it happened.
