Freezer broken down ??

Hi There
Can anyone help me out here. My son bought a brand new Fridge Freezer from Comet about 18 months back and never took out extended warranty as way to much.
He phoned me yesterday to tell me that the freezer has stopped working and completely defrosted.
I am so annoyed as I would have thought it would have lasted longer than this.
I can recall seeing a thread somewhere about consumer rights saying that although the guarantee had expired there was still a basis for claiming that goods were not up to standard and you could claim repair or replacement as it did not live upto its expected lifespan. Or words to that effect.
Can anyone help point me in the right direction here I cannot afford to replace or repair it nor can my son.
Thanks
Crystal
P.S Didnt know where best to place this so posted here and DFW.

If it just suddenly stopped it sounds like an electrical fault, maybe a bad connection? I presume you have checked the obvious such as the fuse?0

Yes checked the plug fuses and connections all seem okay and fridge still lights up not sure if its working properly though.

The fridge and freezer parts are normally quite seperate, i.e. different compressors, etc. so it is quite possible that one can fail whilst the other is working normally.
The fridge part packed up on mine recently, turned out to be the thermostat, which cost around £20 to buy and is about the only part you can replace yourself. Parts like the compessor require special tools, etc. so you will need to get a "professional" in.0
