I am a novice when it comes to camcorders and was after a bit of expert advice. have a panasonic dvd recorder dmr e55 and have been told by panasonic that a RAM camcorder is best. I have some old footage on sony 8mm high grade tape and want to tranfer onto disk. I also obviously want to be able to play what i record on my panasonic dvd recorder. I have a budget of around £500 and would be grateful for advice as to what model to go for

There is a good over view of the various camcorder formats with pros and cons here The format you are referring to is called dvd on this page.
The same site also has a fairly comprehensive review section here browse the cams in dvd format and a useful forum hereDemocracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.
