quickie question from an idiot (me)

Last night my pc went tits up, Had to do a complete recovery, Lost all my photos and vids of the kids and everything, spent all night doing the upgrades as this thing is 5yrs old.

Just a simple thing is bugging me now, the drop down search suggestions in the google search box, I can not get them to turn off, I have upgraded to IE8, I cant remember what it was before i think it was 7, and i didnt have this problem.

  • You referring to the main google web page? If so click on 'search settings' in the top right hand corner, scroll down to 'query suggestions', select '[FONT=arial,sans-serif][SIZE=-1]Do not provide query suggestions in the search box' and then save settings.

If you're referring to the google tool bar, right click on the search box and untick 'show suggestions'.

Lesson for all here, Backup, Backup and Backup again regularly, Writable CDs/DVDs are generally best but copying everything important (Docs, Photos, videos) from time to time to an external USB drive or 2nd PC/Laptop is a good second.
  • Shame you lost the lot, why not access the data before a full restore, Duh.

Pc wouldnt let me do anything said i had system 32 error it was either corrupt or missing:o I dont know how that happened though.

I will in future be putting pics on discs or storing them on somewhere like photobucket so i dont lose them forever.
    Lesson learnt:o

Too late now but what I like to do is if the PC has a single disk, partition the disk with two partitions, one for the main OS and the other partition for personal files. That way if you need to reinstall the OS, only the OS partition is wiped, your personal data remains intact ... unless you have a HDD failure ... but regular backups are recommended :)

Upload your photos to Windows Live SkyDrive.

You get 25 GB of storage (that's a lot of photos) and it's free.

But if you do this keep you're own backup too, I'd certainly not rely on someone else on the net to reliably keep my backups safe and sound for when I needed them.

Having several backups is never a bad idea.

I don't think Microsoft are going anywhere any time soon though.
