Washing Machine Spin noise

Hi,
I'm after people's thoughts here, on what the problem might be. When my washing machine is either speeding up to, or slowing down from a fast spin it now makes a strange noise. The noise isn't heard during the spin itself, only speeding up / slowing down. The noise is a knocking sound.
Some people have told me that it might be the bearings, in which case it would be better for me to replace the whole machine.
What do you guys think?
Thanks

Most likely the bearings but
Two other things to check are;
1)The drum securing bolts and mountings. More than once i have seen one of these come loose and this can have a similar effect.
2) The machine is level when not in use.
Try "rocking" it from front to back to be sure the machine is level to the floor and the feet adjusted properly.0 -
i dont think its too expensive to replace the bearings aslong as you catch it in time.
maybe u could get a couple of free estimates...0 -
If you rotate the drum by hand and it knocks then its the bearings. If not, then it is most likely that the weights are loose or the suspension mounts need greasing.
1) Check that the concrete weights are tight.
2) The suspension mounts go between the bottom of the drum and the base of the unit. Sometimes they look like shock absorbers with springs - others are just metal rods that go through nylon bushes (hoover etc). If the nylon bushes have gone (take out and check to see if worn through) then cost is about £3 per set.
Drum bearings are approx £30 with 2.5 hours labour. New machines to be had from £150 with 2nd year free warranty if bought on Barclaycard and meets their conditions.0 -

Thanks for the advice.
All the springs etc... seem to be in place. However, the manufacturer provides a 5 year parts guarantee, so we're getting them out to take a look at it and any parts that they replace will be free of charge.
Seems the simplest solution at the moment.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

It may also be something as simple as the Drive Belt causing this. It may be warped, frayed or damaged.0
