variable amounts for scrappage
Hello,
I am about to buy a car and have been offered the standard £2000 for the scrappage scheme. However on the front window there is a big sign advertising "£3000 for scrappage. Ask for details inside."
I asked one of the salesmen and he said that the £3000 offer is only for some of the cars, but he was sketchy on the details.
I have not purchased the car yet, can i purchase the car and if i am not given £3000 credit for scrappage on the day of purchase, raise it as an issue with their customer care and get the extra £1000.
would appreciate your advice.

Chances are the sign will have in smaller printer "applies to certain models".
IIRC our local dealers have similar signs, the basic discount is £2k on any car under the scrappage scheme (the Government's side is always £1k, the manufacturers side is a minimum of £1k), however some models have much more of a discount given by the manufacturers, and sometimes it's not the obvious models (IE 2 cars, one nominally £500 more than the other normally, but the more expensive one has £3k on scrappage rather than £2k for the cheaper one).0 -
thanks for the reply,
in case the sign does not state "discount applies to certain models" then can i push them on this?
in case the sign does state that "discount applies to certain models" then should they not provide a list of cars on which the discount applies?0 -
Why haven't you interogated him? Thumb screws if necessary. And if he is still fannying around go elsewhere, and tell him why you are going elsewhere.
I give dealers a fair chance for my business most can't meet my price and that is fine, however some try to baffle with bllsh1t. Don't stand for it.0 -

Invitation to treat!
I.e. Technically it is not an offer so therefore you cannot accept it. It is merely inviting you to make an offer of that amount. For example because of the ad you offer to pay the price of the car less £3000 scrappage, they can then choose whether to accept. Normal convention says that they will but they don't have to.
You are right that on request they should be able to provide further details and poor handling of this could get them in trouble with the ISA but legally not much more.
Having said all of that if you don't ask you don't get.0 -
And no doubt your buying an entry level cheapest around car hence of course the 3k wont apply and this sign doesnt give you any right to say it should.0
-
Well since it is supposed to be an incentive to buy, you aren't likely to buy if you don't know which models it applies to!0

thanks for the replies,
i had already commited to buy and put down a deposit and then i noticed the ad in the window stating £3000 contribution. checked a few dealers
the car i am buying is a 29000 car so a £1000 further reduction through the scrappage should be applicable.0 -

That really is unusual, somebody buying a car for £29.000 on the scrappage scheme.
I suspect that you may well have got a better deal without scrappage on a car in that price range, depending on the make / model of course.0 -
it is a bmw 3 series
they are knocking off 3k which is effectively going towards a 0% interest for 2 years.
and have introduced this business edition (BE) which is effectively 3200 worth of kit for 1000 pounds (leather seats, blue tooth preparation, sat nav)
and then on top of that you get the scrappage scheme ( have this beat up car which would get me 500 max on a trade in)
i was looking for a one year old bimmer/merc anyway and with the BE kit, scrappage, and the 0% thrown in, it works out to a 1 year old car (give or take)0
