BG don't go around giving away £400 presents but whilst you are at fault and are liable, you do have grounds for compensation for wasting your time as well as on compassionate grounds.
You checked and they said you were so far in credit that they repaid you. I think that would carry quite some weight in a small claims action.
I guess you'll have to pay but could perhaps aim for a couple of hundred off and think about how much time you've wasted on dealing with it - get it all written down. I doubt they would look to defend a small claims amount for a few hundred in this case if you can prove your side and they'd eventually write some off as a goodwill gesture.0
