Answering Services

We've changed from BT to Euphony as our call provider.
Now we'd like to throw away our old fax machine as it's not used - except for the answering machine part...
I know BT does an answering service - but we're not with them for calls...
Don't know if Euphony has such a service - I've just emailed them as they don't mention it on their website.
Has anyone got any ideas?

IIRC, Euphony is a CPS (Carrier PreSelect) provider (i.e. your outgoing calls are routed via them but you still pay your £11/month line rental to BT).
If so, you could have BT 1571 on your line because your incoming calls are still carried by BT.
However, I'd suggest you go back to an old fashioned answering machine instead (I bought a BT Decor 500 LST/TAM on ebay for less than £10 delivered).
The reasoning is simple. Why should people (family and friends in particular) have to pay their provider's minimum call charge to reach '1571' on my line just because I'm already using the phone?
With a TAM, if they get an engaged tone it costs them nothing, they know I'm in and so they can try again after a few minutes.
OTOH, if I'm out, I set the TAM to answer after 9 rings - F&F know to let it ring 6 or 7 times and then hang up if they don't want to be charged for the call (or wait for 2 more rings if they want to leave a message).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
