If you don't feel up to looking at the car yourself, an "automotive electrician" would be cheaper than a dealer and these are exactly the sorts of things they deal with. There'll be an automotive electrician section in the Yellow Pages and wot not.

fuses, relay, wiring (probably boot hinge area), bad earth or faulty ignition switch (although i dont think the switch would apply to the wiper)

has fixed it now, it was a wire that had snapped and needed to be soldered together.
