Been paying our house insurance TWICE!!!

Can anyone help? I'm guessing we've passed the point of no return really, but we thought our house insurance was due last October, and stupidly got to February and thought "Whoops, best get some!"... So, I bought house insurance in Feb, not realising we had already bought house insurance in October!

So, we've had house insurance running since October last year, and also running from February this year... Can we get the February money back at all? Otherwise it's over £100 down the drain!

Are you paying one or both policies monthly ie by DD, or did you pay both up front in full?
Are both policies with the same company?
Worst case you paid 2 different companies in full, you'll need to cancel one policy and probobly get a refund for the period from date of cancellation onwards. Check the cancellation terms of each company as there's likely to be an admin charge deducted from the pro-rata rebate based on number of months left.
You are unlikely to be able to claim back for the months already double-paid unless it's the same company.

I thought that would be the case. Both paid up front, so I guess now I may as well let the February policy run, and I've lost c.£70. !!!!.

I assume from your response it's 2 different companies?

Can't see what anyone can add - the obvious thing to do is ring the companies!!

On the plus side, you've survived financially for the last year. Until you realised what you'd done, you didn't miss the £100. So write it off as experience and move on!

    Yes.

    It is called dual insurance:

Write down the dates of the dual insurance and the prices paid and write to BOTH insureres with copies of BOTH insurance schedules, including how much was paid to both insurers. They *should* both refund you half of what you paid them.

Also decide which policy to cancel and again inform BOTH insurers which policy is to be cancelled.

    HTH

Yep, 2 different companies. I'll be ringing them both tomorrow to see their views on the issue. I would've thought it would be like motor insurance, where you can't physically insure it more than once.

Financially, it's not a huge loss in the grand scheme of things; but it's just really annoying. It's effectively £70 just down the drain, unless the below post can work for me!

Thanks Jenny - I'll give it a go. The October policy ends in a few days anyway, so I'm ringing them tomorrow to tell them not to automatically renew. Then I will speak to them both about dual insurance.

Don't you check your bank statements or your active direct debits on your online banking?

Your lucky you did not have to make a claim. Can you imagine how long it would have took as they argued who was going to pay.
