Recently bought a JVC GR-DF420 and cannot get it to connect to PC. Bought a firewire card as none on computer and also a usb-firewire cable to try that.
Any thoughts on this?

USB and Firwire are not the same thing. You need a firewire cable to connect your camera to your pc. According to the review here your cam doesn't have USB connectivity. Cam gets a good review. I've been looking for one myself but would prefer a model with dv in/out.

Yes I do know they are different but there is a cable which connects a usb port to the firewire port on the cam. I have solved the problem.
Bought a firewire card with Via chip and a cable, did not work.
Bought a new card with NEC chip and cable.Using the old cable it did not work, however I used the new cable (which went further into the socket) and all was well. I'll now try the new cable in the old card just to prove whether its the card or cable.I think the cable part which goes into the cam is slightly shorter and is not making contact. The moral is 'try a new cable first' before buying a new card.
