Hello all
I am looking for some advice regarding travel insurance for my son. He is 5 and has epilepsy. Unfortunately its not very well controlled and recently he has had a terrible time in and out of hospital with his seizures.
We are looking to take him away on a flight from home here in North Scotland to Birmingham for 4 days. I am having real trouble trying to get insurance for him and even the number recommended by Epilepsy Action has said they are unable to insure him. I found one quote online for £795!? Surely this cannot be!
Any advice on what company is best to check for a quote and also would you say its absolutely necessary on such a short flight within the UK?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

Insurance that will cover uncontrolled medical conditions can be very expensive! It may be worth calling the Help the Aged Insurers - though it is aimed at a very different age group, it does cover many pre existing conditions.
One point to consider - does your son have medical clearance to fly? The airline may require something in writing to confirm this.
The main thing that insurance will cover in this instance is repatriation, and any other additional costs incurred. Also, should there be an incident whilst flying, an airline may charge for diversion costs, if they feel that the person should not have been flying. This is rare, but could result in costs into the thousands.Gone ... or have I?0 -
Hi, I have epilepsy and I used flexicover. Cost me £140 for world wide 1 year cover for 2 adults, but you can buy single trip cover. But my epilepsy sounds a lot more controlled. Will be difficult if not controlled because the screening test asks how many seizures in the last month, year etc and how many hospital admisons.
DMG is right though you might have problems with airlines willing to carry if you dont have a doctors note saying he is fit to fly.0 -
Try All Clear. I've found they are much more reasonable for travel insurance where there are pre existing medical conditions and you can get an online quote by answering some questions on their web page. Worth a try. Good luck.0

As someone who has severe elpipsy my advice would be not to take him on a flight while his condition is not controlled, might be better to drive or take the train, even if the flight is of short duration and he suffered a severe seizure the time it takes to land and get proper medical treatment could be crucial0

Quite right, I couldn't imagine haivng a seizure in such a confined space as a plane and the risk the cabin crew may want to divert and take him off to hospital, even if you are saying he does not need it, then want you to pay for that diversion.
Or if he does need it the delay could be very dangerous as it aint quick to land a plane and find a hospital and when you do the care may be nowhere near the care you would get in the UK.0
