Hi. Thanks for all the replies.

Why would you be considering option 3 when you can do option 2 saving £150- £300?

I wasn't too sure how much I'd get when I show the MOT cert with the attached advisory sheet.

You need about a £100 of work on the car (brake pipe and shocker) -advisories are a pass, though with potential/likely future faults drawn to your attention - so you can either make do and mend with a better local garage and keep a car you know, or spend more money on an unknown.

I'll phone around for some more quotes, £100 would be good but i'm not sure if its attainable. Garage also said brake fluid may need replacing.

The other car is older than my current but has FSH was serviced every year and runs well. I realise its a risk swapping cars but I do feel i've run my course with the Festa. Last year alone I had an additional £200 expsense when the coil spring snapped! The previous year I spent around £300 on suspension problems too.

Don't worry over the advisory jobs, the garage is just saying these things will need attention in the future.
I have an 05 fiesta, my Mot last year the Ford agents testing station advised me my handbrake would need doing. A few weeks ago i had this years test, i'd only done 1500miles in the year but still the handbrake wasn;t mentioned, i got a first time pass, at the same garage.

    This is my main worry,

in '08 I spent £619 fixing brakes, suspension, roll bars, wishbones
in '09 (to date) £380 discs and pads, brake shoes, front springs, NSR wheel bearing and it is still has problems with the brakes! In '08-early '09 I was still receiving my stipend but now I'm not and costs like these are becomming a little crippling.

The devil you know is worth a lot to you. I agree with an other poster probably better spending the money on it.

If you need a new brake pipe/hose fitting, brakes will need to be bled anyway and that'll be new fluid. :)

You are right to be concerned about advisory notes. Whilst it is true that the work does not need immediate attention, any buyers will be aware that the work will require being done soon and most will deduct the likely cost from any offer they would otherwise make.

shop around for some cheap parts ...shouldnt come to much

its not alot of work or a bad car because it needs those few bits

if it has low profile tyres does it have flash alloys...maybe do a swap with a local chav for thier standard steels

The good news is that you wont need to replace these anytime soon..

I would take the car into another garage for a quick quote to get the work done, they should put the car on the ramp and have a look at it.

It could be that the mot tester is having a bad day, or they are actually gone.

If the 2nd garage say its ok, or just needs a clean up then get them to re-mot the car and be done with it.

I had a similar things with a local motorcycle MOT place. I took it to them, and they failed it on 3 things. Not long before i had a £850 service on the 1989 motorcycle. I was not happy. On the advice from the mechanic carrying out the service, i took it too another garage who quite happily passed it, and commented on how clean & tidy it was.

From then, its been to 2 other garages in the next few years and passed with no issues.

Is the garage you took it to one of the big firms, like kwik fit, nationwide etc?
