Smoking fines in Canary Wharf?

Not sure if this is the right forum, but hey ho..
I heard a few people got on the spot fined yesterday (by plain clothes officers on behalf of the Canary Wharf Estate, not usual security) for not smoking in the designated areas in Canary Wharf. I don't know how much etc but I don't understand how that can be enforceable, considering it's not against the law to smoke outside.
Any thoughts, legal or otherwise?
Thanks,
pippitypip

I know I'm in my own little world, but it's ok - they know me here!

It might be worth posting on this forum http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.html?f=163 as your case will have a lot of similarities to the private parking fines the guys and girls on there are experts on.
You can copy and paste your post (It is worth pointing out you have also posted on this thread so they know there is a duplicate thread)0 -
The whole of Canary wharf is a private business as far as im aware and maybe it applies to everywhere seeing as some parts are undercover and if they have designated smoking areas maybe this is why. Or were they fined for dropping the butts on the floor which is also illegalone of the famous 50

Thanks dacouch, will do.
geordieracer - they do have designated smoking areas and yes, the Canary Wharf estate is a private business but the fines were for smoking in a non-designated smoking area (not for dropping butts) as far as I'm aware.
I don't see how they can make the rules up as they go though?

Seems strange indeed, maybe they enforce no smoking over the whole of the estate then? i really dont know.one of the famous 50 -
I'm not a smoker but if I was I wouldnt be handing money over to anyone without ID.
Some friends got fined by Premier Inn because they could 'smell smoke' in the bathroom. They had to pay £100 with their card. I didn't think it was the business itself that you had to pay the fine to?!0 -

Tell them to put an onion cut in half in the room while they are smoking next time, it will not make the room smell of onion but eliminates the smell of smoke. We use it all the time and it works0 -
Clever ! But still think they would have been rightly fined as illegal to smoke inside now..
This is outside and blooming infuriating!!

Ooh that's a new one on me, I'm pretty sure you can smoke outside a station, but inside, some of it is part covered and a station is one building overall (even if some parts are outside) - plus there are signs up everywhere at least.
This is entirely an oustide area, like, well not "like" but exactly walking down a road and being fined for smoking as it's private property but NO warning signs to boot!

All network rail station property is off limits to smoking technically. Though most dont mind if you stand away from the front of the station as we understand its a pain when its raining.
expensive to smoke innitone of the famous 50
