check mail before arrivng inyour inbox

Couldnt see this on here so apologies if it is!

http://www.mailwasher.net/

I have used this for over a year now and have never had a problem with my emails since.

I just open it and get alerted if I receive email. I read it in mailwasher, delete what I want and open any dodgy mails to see what they are before they arrive on my PC! Good, clever stuff and Mailwasher can often actually tell you what is a virus. Sorry, I sound like an advert dont I? !

Anyway, I dont have the pro version - which is fab so Im told, but I use the free download. This is what they say

Now you can see all your email waiting for you before it gets to your computer. Think about the advantages of this - spam, viruses and other malicious content can be deleted right off the server so they never even get to your inbox or harm your computer.

MailWasher Pro is the first step in your email-line of defense so you can make informed decisions about your messages. You'll soon be saving much more time with MailWasher Pro - read all your email on the server and delete the messages you don't want, then download only the messages you want to keep and reply to. It's easy to set MailWasher Pro to remove all the spam automatically too so you never see it.

  • Mailwasher is no longer free, I'm afraid. (They only offer a 30 day trial now) :-/

The scanning viruses at server level feature of Mailwasher/Benign is nice but it should not be used as a substitute for scanning incoming e-mails with a fully fledged antivirus client.

As far as spam filters goes, there are some good free alternatives. POPFile and K9 are highly rated.

For those who want to check if they have mail without having to run their e-mail client and click 'Check Mail' every so often, there's a nice free little utility by the name of PopTray that will sit in your tray and alert you when you have new mail and let you preview and delete the messages from the server too. It works with standard POP3 ISP accounts, IMAP and Hotmail.

Not as convenient as having one program do all that but it's all about MoneySaving.

The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.
  • The trial 'pro' version of Mailwasher reverts to a 'Free' version after the trial period if you do not register/purchase the product. The other products you recommend sound good too and yes I wouldnt say that this should replace a good AV etc.

However, if, like me, you get lots and lots of emails, it is jolly handy to use (Mailwasher) if only to stop clogging up your inbox!
I pretty much do all my reading AND deleting via mailwasher and hardly ever have to open my inbox - so hardly ever putting it at risk! However, AVG (from Grsisoft) has also never let me down yet...

I advise people to use https://www.mail2web.com expecially if they presume someone has sent a large video file, which they wish to delete rather than wait for it to download into Outlook.

Another great way to prevent lengthy downloads in Outlook (especially for 56K modem users) is to go into the Outlook options, and in the email send/receive section tell it not to download files bigger than 150KB for example.

    Hope that helps.
