Is there anything we can do ?

Hi ,many years ago ( over 10 ) we used to receive free greenflag membership with TSB 'select account' and we elected to pay a 'top up' to receive a higher level of cover .
After a couple of years we canceled our select account because the cost of the account went up .
fast forward to yesterday ,noticed a payment for greenflag membership went out of my account ,contacted TSB to find its being going out every year for years !!
not only that but the card used to make the initial payment expired in 2005 but still they kept taking payment for a 'top up' to a membership that didnt exist + greenflag stopped dealing with TSB years ago .We have never requested renewal ,never received cards or paperwork ,we have moved several times since anyway.

TSB said we only stand a chance of getting the last payment back and to kiss goodbye to the several hundred other pound .
Im soooo angry ,I never realised this couldnt happen and with an expired card too ??

You say you cancelled the TSB account but did you also formally cancel the greenflag membership?

In this case though there was no Greenflag membership as they were only paying for a top up to the basic membership which stopped when the TSB account stopped. However the membership would have been on a direct debit not off the card. The initial payment would have been card but not the subsequent ones. They could not take payment from a card which did not exist.

When I was a member of greenflag under the same scheme I used to get a membership "card" from them every year. Did you ever receive these during this period. First port of call would be to greenflag to see what they were doing. Second if you can confirm the direct debit would be back to the bank under the direct debit agreement thing as they have been taking money for a service which can't exist as the basic part of the service ceased the moment you stopped the bank account or at the very least when Green Flag was replaced by the AA by TSB.

All the payments were debit card payment ,confirmed by TSB ,they said its standard practice that once a contract is established they can continue paying a company that requests a payment from that card even when its expired ?!
I am soo angry ,i had no idea this possible .
And yes you are right ,I never had membership with greenflag ,only a 'top up'
They have been taking money for a product that does not even exist.
Never received any cards or paperwork ,suppose its all been going to my old address .

Contact greenflag, ask how they have been authorized to do this, then post again.
If you have agreed to let the membership roll on every year..well..that is your fault.

The AA tried this with my last cheapo membership but I emailed them saying I would cancel at expiry plus put a note in my diary to double check, and rang them again to triple check. (Does that make me obsessive?!!)

In practice you have had the benefit of the cover, even if you didn't know, thats why it is probably important to check your bank statement for a year after you move house if you don't redirect your mail. However, someone else may post something more useful to you.

To the OP. Why did it take over ten years for you to look at your bank statements?
