Hi,

You may recall my earlier post 'Who works in IT'.

Thanks for all the previous advice everyone!

I have been offered a job as a mobile field technician. Company car, laptop etc.

They will fully train me from the ground up in networking, and their software package.

The job requires a lot of time on the road, and overnight stays. What would be the minimum salary you would expect me to be offered?

What amount per year would you class as too little, what amount reasonable, and what amount probably quite generous as I have no qualifications?

I don't want to reveal just yet what ive been offered, just trying to get a feel first off you guys what you would expect? / offer a trainee?

20 to 23k per year for first year and second year 5year and up 33k. :o

Thats some of the figures Ive seen of late at Monster Jobs and CW Jobs.

Now I dont know if this is semi or fully skilled as the descriptions were a bit vague as to what kind of field technician networking as their are some variable job posts in this line of work.

No, it'll be nearer £20-25k, especially if you're a trainee or have no experience. £25-27k would be quite optimistic, especially with a jump to £33k in the second year!

I think after two years, depending upon the company, and the areas you specialise in, you should be looking to earn around £30k, maybe more if you've done well.

A trainee earnig £23k Ill take that job.

Trainees at the company I started with earned £12.5k and it rose quickly as they gained experiance but the cap was set at £18k as they would have had to pay the others more and it wasnt that big a company only 20 people.

Larger companies should pay more. Its a tough job all the staying away and driving can make it hard you leave monday and arrive home friday the time in the hotel I found it hard to relax and usually sorted recipts or other paperwork it can get lonley. Saying that I have ben doing it for 8-9 years almost now.
  • We start graduates on 23K and those with a couple of years experience start on 26K (i.e. me). This is based in London... no company car sadly but you get a nice laptop and phone. The first thing they do when you arrive is send you to the USA for 2 weeks for training. Then you get about 2 months of classes/computer based courses to get you up to speed. We've got a massive education program and you can apply to go on a whole range of courses (free of course)

I've only been there 10 months but i heard pay rises were 16-24% in your first year.
  • Beware of the tax trap on company cars. Many previous company car drivers (myself included) have opted out and taken a mileage deal instead. A company car is not a perk but a tax liability.

    Good luck!
