Was my job made reduntant?

I was working for a japanise blue chip company for 12 years,and I got made reduntant.

I use the word "I" and not my "job" as my job was merged with another job.

My job is has the greater share of this new role and I felt I was more qualified to take the joint role than the person who got it.

I got paid off with the legal minimum.

Can companies do this?

Simply yes.

You mentioned that classic phrases:

Anyway, many people panic when companies merge! Mainly due to the above.

so what we have is two differing roles becoming one by the sounds of it. Quite standard but companies need to select the appropriate party for the new role in a fair and objective way or run the risk of the 'other one' kicking up a stink.

Were you and the other employee put through a process of selection? If not then this is a significant question mark. Can you give us a bit of detail re the overal process here? Also did your old company have a redundancy policy and/or were others made redundant within the last 90 days of you?
