Redundancy Pay - I Need Advise

I was informed last week by the MD at my work that my position is now no longer available but there will be two new posts available (both different positions) which I could apply for or take redundancy but just think about it over the weekend. I had another meeting on Monday and was told that I could either do this officially where I take redundancy and take a job of a lower post (which would mean taking a pay cut) and apply for the new posts within the company or do it un officially and take no redundancy and just take the lower post position and apply for the new posts. I have been working there since March 2005 but got the post I am in now since Dec 2007 and they told me that my redundancy would only reflect to my current post, is this correct?
I had another meeting with them today and I said I would take the redundancy as they confirmed there was no difference that if I took the redundancy money or not (weird) and they said they would confirm this all on my offical redundancy meeting and letter on Monday.
I have been told that my redundancy would be taxed but from information that I can find online says redundancy doesn't get taxed before £30K so what they have said just doesn't seem to add up.
I am in serious need of help.

Does'nt make sense to be honest.
Are you trying to tell us, that the company in question will give you 'redundancy wages?' and offer you a new job?
(@) If you have been working in the company since 2005, you will receive roughly 3 weeks redundancy pay of your current salary.
Anyway, I would try and get a contract for the new job you are taking!!!Motto: 'If you don't ask, you don't get!!'
Remember to say thank you to people who help you out!

Agree this doesn't make sense.
You are either redundant or not redundant as below
1) you can take redundancy by not applying for/accepting the new junior role. In this case you should recieve redundancy pay based on your 2005 start date - do not let them tell you otherwise (I'm assuming you were an employee, not a temp, from this date and that there were no gaps in your employment) as this is incorrect
2) If you choose to take the other role then yes, get a new contract (incorporating a continuation of service clause based on your 2005 start) or a change of terms letter at the very least. You should also note that a trial period should be in operation re this new role - ie if you (or the company) feel it is not working out within the first few weeks/months then you can leave with your redundancy package. Make sure you get this in writing as this new role is not a 'like for like' redeployment - it is a more junior position
Finally yes any redundancy pay should be tax and NI free up to 30k so insist on this - notice and any outstanding accrued but untaken annual leave will be taxed as usual
PGo round the green binbags. Turn right at the mouldy George Elliot, forward, forward, and turn left....at the dead badger0
