£80 for a 160 GB HDD is nuts.
If you're scared of fire...then the online option won't do much to save all your other important docuents so get a firesafe box maybe ? put the lot in it?

That's a good idea. My father-in-law has a safety deposit box at the bank where he stores his important papers.

Does it have to be online ?

Why not just use an external drive and a bit of free software like Syncback to schedule a backup at a certain time every day/ week / month ?

I have been doing this for the last few years without any problems, and yes the restores do work when tested.

You WILL have a problem when there is a fire or flood or burglary though. If you are going to do a backup onto another hard drive or onto DVD etc, at least keep it in another location once the backup is done.

    What a rip off.

Again, if you must, keep it in another building, or you are not gaining the full benefit.

Also, once an online backup service is installed it doesn't require any user interaction, it is all done in the background.
