I know what your saying and I sympathis with the OP....My DD school (secondary) makes special provision for those that don't have a pc or internet access by providing paper copies to them but if you do have net access then the kids are expected to use it.

I think they've come to a good compromise...saving some money on paper cost and also utelising technology....thumbs up to my DD school.

As for Libraries, I am not sure "homework" can be done in a Library after hours, as libraries tend to close by 5pm. I am also not sure it is a safe method to send a child out to a library on their own, or expect that the computers in a Library are not already in use.

Many libraries stay open later than this but, even if not, 5pm is a couple of hours after most children finish school.

Since when has a library been a dangerous place that children can't visit unaccompanied?

Most schools have computers the kids can use at lunchtime or after/before school clubs. Most libraries allow you to book computers for use or have children only computers. I am sure in 30 years time your kids will be complaining about how in their day they had to use computers for their homework and whats wrong with that.
But your main gripe seems to be that your kids are using the computer for other means than doing their homework.

Kids using Facebook when they should be doing their homework is really no different from them sitting around watching the telly or whatever when they should be doing the work.

You'd stop them if they were sat in front of the box, right? So why not do the same online? "Faffing about on the computer" aside from homework has nothing to do with it - issue seems to be one of supervision and control over the kids while they're doing their homework, and that's totally separate.

My Daughter's school keep giving her homework she has to print out and hand in

The last one was a picture of a own for D.T. We dont own a printer, so I drew one and gave it to her to hand in :D

Obviously it not being her own work wasn't an issue.
  • I don't know about other parents but if my son is in trouble, one of his main punishment is no computer access (I take his laptop away which to a teenager these days is like cutting off their right arm) the second is grounding.

One particular evening this happened (missed his curfew by a HUGE amount of time not just minutes, i was fuming) and he lost it for the weekend and was grounded. The following Monday he recieved detention for not completing his online homework.

I tried explaining to the school about this particular punishment. A computer is a priviledge not a right in my house. To which i was told i am hindering my childs education!

It does seem wrong that schools automatically expect pupils to have access to the internet at home. I know a few people who don't have computers and it can cause problems. I also think that in terms of research, kids just tend to print off a big chunk from Wikkipedia without thinking about or even reading it. At least if you have to take notes from a library book you have to read some of it.
  • The Internet is fine for doing homework, but does not guarantee that the person doing the task was the pupil!

A simple maths book and handwriting does!

Who said anything about "on their own"? Presumably the child has someone supervising them, so they could go with them, if they're worried about the child's safety. Of course, we know why that wouldn't work... "Sally does ballet class" and "I sit for the kid next door" and "my car only works between 7 and 9am" and "the courts say I'm not allowed within 200 yards of a book" and yada yada yada.

This topic fascinates me...it's one that people are determined to find reasons to complain about. No matter what alternatives you provide people with, they'll come up with some reason they can't do it, how unfair it is etc etc etc.

You might have missed the point where the OP said that s/he was talking about secondary school rather than primary.
